Money & Family Commitments More Stressful than Work Says vhi.ie Poll

8th April 2002 - Family and money commitments cause more stress than work according to a poll carried out by health portal www.vhi.ie.

At 36 per cent, workplace stress is the highest single cause of stress, but the combination of family and monetary stress comes in 20 per cent higher at 43 per cent.

According to psychologist and vhi.ie stress expert, Karen Belshaw, this suggests that while people still find work stressful, they would be better off focusing on their time and activities outside work to reduce their overall stress level.

"Successful stress management involves finding the right coping strategies that suit you and to enable you deal with daily stressors. Having better life balance will have long lasting rewards," says Karen. "After all we are all searching for a better quality of life. What is important is to enjoy the challenge rather than dreading simple daily living."

Karen's simple strategies for relaxation include taking a bath, listening to music, swimming, joining a yoga class, going for a walk, taking up a new hobby - all good motivators to help de-stress your life and make your leisure time fun and interesting.
