Vhi HomeCare is an innovative new clinical service available exclusively to Vhi Healthcare members. This allows suitable patients to be treated by doctors and nurses in the comfort and safety of their own homes, where previously hospital admissions was the only option.
While hospital is certainly the most appropriate place for certain patients, many people are admitted and undergo long hospital stays for treatments that, due to advances in technology and clinical expertise, are now widely accepted as suitable for treatment outside of hospital.
What is Vhi HomeCare?
Vhi HomeCare is a ‘Hospital in the Home’ service which provides acute care in the home and involves:
- Treatment of patients with acute conditions who would otherwise have required treatment in a hospital bed.
- Provision of the level and type of services that would normally be provided in
a hospital bed.
- Provision of those services within the home.
- Provision of an appropriate level of emergency back up
How does Vhi HomeCare work?
Vhi HomeCare is based on the “Hospital in the Home” concept. This type of home treatment of various medical conditions has been safely and successfully provided in countries such as the USA and Australia for many years and more recently here in Ireland. Up until the groundbreaking development of “Hospital in the Home” the requirement for any intravenous therapy and appropriate management and support meant the patient had to remain an inpatient in hospital.
Reassuringly, the Hospital in the Home concept has been pioneered in Ireland by the same clinical team that will provide your care while on the Vhi HomeCare programme. This specialist clinical team is unique in Ireland and is led by Professor Gerry McElvaney and has safely and successfully treated thousands of patients in their own homes for many acute illnesses and chronic conditions.
The Vhi HomeCare service is based around a dedicated consultant led medical and nursing team. Patients may be referred to Vhi HomeCare via the following sources:
- A General Practitioner referral relating to a patient in their own home or a Nursing Home in the Greater Dublin Area, or
- A referral from a consultant attached to a hospital listed for benefit from one of the following routes:
- Accident & Emergency Department.
- From the hospitals inpatient wards.
- Consultants' Rooms.
